Mold Remediation

Enviro USA • September 24, 2020

With all of the storms that have been happening across the United States there has been water damage. Usually where there is water damage there is mold.

There are 13 types of mold that happen in a building in different areas. Today I will be going over those types.

  • Acremonium – This is a toxigenic mold which starts up as a small and moist mold but then evolves into a fine powder. It can mainly be found in window sills.
  • Alternaria – Alternaria is one of the most common molds. It usually appears in dimly lit or darker and damper areas.
  • Aspergillus – This is another very common mold type which thankfully is not that harmful to humans when its spores are inhaled. Some of the more severe reactions to Aspergillus spores can include allergic reactions, inflammation of the lungs, or other respiratory infections.
  • Aureobasidium – This mold type can grow on wooden surfaces, wooden furniture, wallpaper, painted walls, and caulk and around the windows. It is usually black and pink in color and appears like spots in some of these areas.
  • Chaetomium – This type of mold typically grows in drywall, which has undergone water damage. It has a cotton-like structure and a musty smell, which makes it easy to recognize. It can cause nail and skin infections and is particularly dangerous for people with compromised immune systems.
  • Cladosporium – This is another allergenic mold type which though is unique because it can grow both in warm and in cold conditions.  It can grow in carpets, upholstery, old fabrics, wood floorboards, wooden furniture and in cupboards.
  • Fusarium – Fusarium is also capable of growing in colder conditions. It is both an allergenic and a toxigenic type of mold which can grow in carpets, wallpaper, other fabrics, and materials usually after water damage.
  • Mucor – This is an allergenic mold type which grows in thick white or grey colored patches. It grows pretty quickly and can often be found around air conditioners, ducting and HVAC systems where there are condensation and moisture. Damp old carpets can also develop Mucor mold.
  • Penicillium – Penicillium is easy to recognize because of its blue or green coloring and its unique velvety texture. It can be found in carpets, insulation, ducting, mattresses, wallpapers and other materials and furniture.
  • Stachybotrys Chartarum – This is also known as the “black mold” and is a toxic type of mold which can cause various allergic reactions. It has a dark green or black color and a slimy texture and a musty smell.
  • Trichoderma – This is a mold which loves damp areas and can be found in damp carpeting, wallpapers or on other surfaces.
  • Ulocladium – Ulocladium is usually black in color and can be found in wet and water damaged areas, such as walls with high condensation, basements, as well as in bathrooms, kitchens, and others.

Allergenic molds – these can cause allergic reactions such as nasal congestion, wheezing, sneezing, coughing, skin irritation, and asthma attacks.

Pathogenic molds – these are especially dangerous for people who are already suffering from a chronic or acute illness.

Toxigenic molds: these are the molds which produce the toxic substances which can cause serious and even fatal conditions to otherwise healthy people as well.

If you suspect you may have mold in your building, please contact a professional company and do not try to take of it yourself as some molds are highly toxic.

There are steps to Remediation that must be followed:

  1. Locate the source of the moisture, sometimes it is leaky pipes or water from windows.
  2. Repair source of moisture. Unless from flooding then make sure area is dry.
  3. Isolate the mold contaminated area/s.
  4. Make and complete a remediation plan.
  5. Clean and remediate contaminated area/s.
  6. Determine if cleanup has been successful. Retest if needed.

Early Origins: Pagan Roots: Long before Christianity, winter solstice celebrations were common across Europe. These festivals, often involving feasting, merrymaking, and the exchange of gifts, celebrated the return of the sun after the shortest day of the year. Roman Influence: The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a week-long festival honoring the god Saturn, featuring feasting, revelry, and gift-giving. The Rise of Christian Christmas: Early Christian Celebrations: Early Christians did not initially celebrate Jesus's birth. The focus was on Easter, commemorating his resurrection. The Fourth Century: In the 4th century CE, Roman Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity. Gradually, the celebration of Christmas began to emerge, likely influenced by the existing winter solstice festivals. December 25th: The date of December 25th was chosen, possibly to coincide with the Roman festival of Sol Invictus (the "Invincible Sun"). The Middle Ages and Beyond: Medieval Europe: Christmas in the Middle Ages was a time of feasting, religious observances, and community gatherings. The Reformation: The Protestant Reformation in the 16th century led to varying Christmas traditions across Europe. Some Protestant groups initially discouraged the celebration, considering it too closely linked to Catholic practices. Victorian Era: The Victorian era in England saw a resurgence of Christmas celebrations, with traditions like the Christmas tree, decorated with ornaments and lights, becoming popular. Global Spread of Christmas: Colonialism and Missionaries: European colonialism played a significant role in spreading Christmas traditions around the world, often alongside Christian missionary efforts. Modern Era: In the 20th century, Christmas evolved into a global commercial phenomenon, with the exchange of gifts, festive decorations, and holiday meals becoming central to celebrations worldwide. Key Symbols and Traditions: Christmas Tree: Originating in Germany, the Christmas tree has become a ubiquitous symbol of the holiday. Santa Claus: Based on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus evolved into a beloved figure bringing gifts to children. Christmas Carols: Traditional songs like "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells" add to the festive atmosphere. Christmas Dinner: Traditional meals vary by region, with roast turkey, ham, and other festive dishes being common. Conclusion: Christmas today is a diverse and multifaceted celebration, reflecting its rich and complex history. From its pagan roots to its global popularity, Christmas continues to evolve, adapting to different cultures and traditions while retaining its core message of joy, peace, and goodwill. Disclaimer: This is a simplified overview of a complex history. I hope you enjoyed this brief look at the history of Christmas!

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but your facility better be delightful! As property managers, we're about to enter that magical time of year when every day feels like Black Friday, and your building's foot traffic rivals Times Square on New Year's Eve. Let's get your space holiday-ready before chaos ensues! The Great Customer Migration Like geese heading south for winter, shoppers and office workers are about to descend upon your facility in record numbers. Unless you want your floors looking like they've hosted a mud wrestling competition, it's time to amp up those janitorial services. Remember: clean floors are happy floors, and happy floors mean fewer customers doing their best ice-skating impressions in your lobby. HVAC: The Unsung Hero of Holiday Harmony Your HVAC system is about to experience the equivalent of running a marathon while wearing a Santa suit. One minute it's dealing with the Arctic blast from constantly opening doors, the next it's combating the heat generated by hundreds of shopping-bag-wielding customers in winter coats. Show your HVAC some love with preventive maintenance before it decides to take an unscheduled holiday break of its own. Deck the Halls (Without the Falls) Sure, that 20-foot inflatable snowman seems like a great idea until it breaks free and terrorizes the parking lot. Exterior Excellence (Or: How to Not Look Like the Grinch's Lair) First impressions count, especially when your building is competing with every other twinkling, sparkly establishment on the block. Get those windows so clean that birds will apologize for even thinking about leaving their mark.
