US From Revolution to Fireworks: A Quick History of the 4th of July

June 30, 20252 min read

Every July 4th, we fire up the grills, throw on the red, white, and blue, and light up the sky with fireworks — but how much do we really know about why we celebrate?

At Enviro USA Inc., we believe in honoring history while building for the future. So today, we're pressing pause on facility care to take a moment to salute America’s birthday — and the bold beginnings that brought us here.

📜 The Declaration Heard 'Round the World

Let’s rewind to 1776. The American colonies were done playing nice with the British crown. After years of unfair taxes, zero representation, and tea parties with very dramatic endings, the colonies were ready to make it official.

On July 4th, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted by a 33-year-old Thomas Jefferson. With bold words and risky signatures, thirteen colonies declared themselves the United States of America — free and independent from British rule.

Was it dangerous? Absolutely.
Was it revolutionary? Literally.

🎇 The First Celebrations

The ink was barely dry before Americans started celebrating. In fact, July 4, 1777 — just one year later — Philadelphia held the first official Independence Day celebration: cannons, bonfires, parades, and fireworks lit up the city in patriotic spirit.

That tradition stuck. Today, cities across the country carry on that same energy — minus the cannon fire (usually).

📆 When Did It Become a National Holiday?

While the Declaration was signed in 1776, Independence Day didn’t become a federal holiday until 1870 — nearly a century later. And it wasn’t until 1941 that Congress made it a paid holiday for federal employees. Because nothing says patriotism like PTO.

US The Spirit of Independence

Fourth of July isn’t just about hot dogs and sparklers. It’s a celebration of:

  • Freedom — the right to self-govern and speak freely

  • Courage — the boldness to stand up for what’s right

  • Unity — the power of 13 colonies becoming one nation

At Enviro USA Inc., we see that same spirit in the businesses we serve every day — bold, resilient, and built on strong foundations.

🎆 However You Celebrate, Celebrate Safely

Whether you're firing up the grill, heading to a parade, or just enjoying a well-earned day off, we hope your July 4th is full of pride, joy, and maybe a little extra barbecue sauce.

From our family at Enviro USA Inc. to yours —
Happy Independence Day!
Let freedom ring (just not in the form of firecrackers in the office, please).
