Today’s blog is about Backflow testing.
Many states require backflow testing to be done and if you are not up to date on the test your water main can be shut off.
Now what is backflow testing exactly?
The short answer is: a process that is used to test your plumbing system to make sure your drinking water is not being contaminated by dirty water that could be in your water supply. In some states your fire sprinkler system needs to be backflow tested as well. Not only does your building need this testing it also can help find current or potential leaks in your system which can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.
How is the testing done?
Annually your building needs a backflow test, before this can happen the following must be done.
A licensed and certified plumber/technician must turn off the water to the building, all model and serial numbers must be recorded, as well as observing and recording conditions of the devices.
Once that is completed the technician will check the following areas:
Once these tests are complete more states require the technician to fill out a report that they must turn in the proper offices to have the annual test in the system.
Terminology that you will hear during your testing:
Backflow – means the reversal of the flow of liquid, gas or suspended solid into the water supply.
Backflow Preventer – a device that is designed to keep backflow from happening is usually referred to as an air-gap.
Back-siphonage – this occurs when higher pressure fluids, gases or solids move to an area of lower pressure fluids, this will pull the higher pressure fluids into the system.
Back-pressure – Is when natural gases have been forced into the water tank instead of air.
