Commercial Pest Control

May 25, 2022

With summer edging its way in pests are out and about and probably invading your building.

Today I am going to go over the types pests that usually effect your building and some of the pest control plans to eliminate them.

Types of Pests:

  • Termites – Termites will seek out any wood, including chairs, tables and desks. If left untreated termites can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your structure and furniture.
  • House flies – Even though they have the word house in the name these insects can show up anywhere. They are attracted to garbage, restrooms and standing water. They can make a customer feel your property is unclean.
  • Rodents – Rodents can carry diseases. Mice and Rats will chew through walls, furniture, and are known to chew through wires which some cases can cause electrical fires. Not to mention leaving their droppings everywhere. You want to eliminate these right away.
  • Spiders – Now it is true that spiders can be beneficial as they eat smaller insects and can help keep that population under control. But you do not want them in your building especially Black Widows, which will hide in dark areas of your building.
  • Cockroaches – These will give your building a bad reputation on site. Most people would think these would only effect the food industry but they go after damp places, food in trash cans. There are also different types of cockroaches. German cockroaches which are very hard to kill and have a life cycle of 12 months in which the produce hundreds of eggs, American cockroaches these are capable of flying, Brown banded which the males can fly but they both jump when disturbed, Oriental cockroaches they live about six months and primarily feed on organic matter.
  • Crickets – They actually carry a lot of germs. And even though they are primarily nocturnal they can be very active during the day. They are hard to find as well and are essentially the ninjas of the insect world.
  • Ants – Now there are a few types of ants you will normally see. Pavement Ants this type are found outside on sidewalks and stairs they build small nests along the edges, black house ant these usually come through a window or crack in the wall, Carpenter ant these types love to excavate wood to build their nests in it, Fire ants come through exterior walls or cracks in siding or HVAC systems and they do bite. There are more types but these are the main ones seen.

Now that we have covered the main type of pests let’s move on to some types of pest control.

Types of Services:

  • Registered Pesticide - To become approved, a pesticide must go through the registration process, which involves a review of the ingredients, where the pesticide will be used, how often it will be used, and how it will be disposed of. The process helps evaluate the pesticides potential risk to animal and plant life, including human life. The health risks evaluated include both short-term and long-term effects (such as cancer). The potential risk of surface and ground water contamination is also considered before the pesticide can be approved or denied.
  • Insect Growth Regulators - An insect growth regulator is designed to hinder the maturation process from egg to adult. Most growth regulators don't actually work on adult insects, but they work well on the egg, larva and pupa. Many eggs treated with this type of pesticide never hatch. Larva exposed to insect growth regulators may never create a pupa, causing them to die as larva. Last, when a pupa is exposed to regulators, it may never hatch, which means it can never reproduce.
  • Repellents - Insect repellents are chemicals that keep certain pests away. You may have used them on your own body to prevent mosquito bites, but repellents can also be used to generally keep pests away from your home. For the most part, however, this may only be a temporary solution. There is also Attractants that can be used in conjunction with repellants.
  • Live Catch – This type of pest control is usually done with bees. Usually a live catch is taken and released to manmade hives to maintain the life of the bees.
  • Electronic Pest Control - Recent technological advances have allowed for alternative ways of dealing with pest problems. Electromagnetic gadgets will target the nervous systems of certain species, repelling mice, rodents, arts and other insects. Ultrasonic devices are also used to emit high frequency sound ways that affect small vermin species.
  • Baits and Traps – These are used for all types of pests. Most baits the pest will eat from it then take it back to the nest and it starts to kill the entire nest. Traps are more for rodents such as mice, rats, raccoons etc.

There are many more types of Pest Control it all depends on the species of pest and what is best for your building.

Early Origins: Pagan Roots: Long before Christianity, winter solstice celebrations were common across Europe. These festivals, often involving feasting, merrymaking, and the exchange of gifts, celebrated the return of the sun after the shortest day of the year. Roman Influence: The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a week-long festival honoring the god Saturn, featuring feasting, revelry, and gift-giving. The Rise of Christian Christmas: Early Christian Celebrations: Early Christians did not initially celebrate Jesus's birth. The focus was on Easter, commemorating his resurrection. The Fourth Century: In the 4th century CE, Roman Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity. Gradually, the celebration of Christmas began to emerge, likely influenced by the existing winter solstice festivals. December 25th: The date of December 25th was chosen, possibly to coincide with the Roman festival of Sol Invictus (the "Invincible Sun"). The Middle Ages and Beyond: Medieval Europe: Christmas in the Middle Ages was a time of feasting, religious observances, and community gatherings. The Reformation: The Protestant Reformation in the 16th century led to varying Christmas traditions across Europe. Some Protestant groups initially discouraged the celebration, considering it too closely linked to Catholic practices. Victorian Era: The Victorian era in England saw a resurgence of Christmas celebrations, with traditions like the Christmas tree, decorated with ornaments and lights, becoming popular. Global Spread of Christmas: Colonialism and Missionaries: European colonialism played a significant role in spreading Christmas traditions around the world, often alongside Christian missionary efforts. Modern Era: In the 20th century, Christmas evolved into a global commercial phenomenon, with the exchange of gifts, festive decorations, and holiday meals becoming central to celebrations worldwide. Key Symbols and Traditions: Christmas Tree: Originating in Germany, the Christmas tree has become a ubiquitous symbol of the holiday. Santa Claus: Based on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus evolved into a beloved figure bringing gifts to children. Christmas Carols: Traditional songs like "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells" add to the festive atmosphere. Christmas Dinner: Traditional meals vary by region, with roast turkey, ham, and other festive dishes being common. Conclusion: Christmas today is a diverse and multifaceted celebration, reflecting its rich and complex history. From its pagan roots to its global popularity, Christmas continues to evolve, adapting to different cultures and traditions while retaining its core message of joy, peace, and goodwill. Disclaimer: This is a simplified overview of a complex history. I hope you enjoyed this brief look at the history of Christmas!
